No more waiting, John Mayer. Across the internet yesterday, people posted current events-appropriate songs like Parliament-Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove", James Brown's "Funky President (People It's Bad)", and, of course, Ray Charles' "America the Beautiful". But if the song of Election Night was "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, whose lyrics Obama paraphrased in his speech that brisk Chicago evening, it's only fitting that the first dance of the inaugural Neighborhood Ball would be Etta James' classic "At Last". Beyoncé, who had a minor hit with the song on last year's Cadillac Records soundtrack, stays true to James' definitive 1961 version of the 1941 Mack Gordon/Harry Warren composition, adding her own vocal pyrotechnics as the First Couple sways sweetly in formal attire. A new President has come along-- the song doesn't say what comes next.Kanye West was also on hand at the Neighborhood Ball, getting the party started with an ecstatic medley. He concludes with 808s and Heartbreak's "Heartless", changing some lyrics at the end to mark the occasion. "Everybody make some noise for our new President Obama," West enthuses. "It feels so good to be standing here. My Mama would be so proud right now, to see her baby boy performing the #1 song in the country for our new African-American president... She got arrested for being involved in the sit-ins at age six, and my grandfather drove the first car in the marches out of Oklahoma." Whether your politics are more Puff Daddy or Daddy Yankee, it was a truly historic night.
