Former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman and general all-around punk rock legend Bob Mould and Our Band Could Be Your Life author Michael Azerrad will be teaming up to write Mould's autobiography. As far as indie-rock books go, this is something of a perfect combination. Our Band Could Be Your Life, which included a really great chapter on Hüsker, is basically the best book ever written about the American rock underground of the 1980s. (Sorry, Get in the Van.) Azerrad also wrote Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana and produced the Kurt Cobain documentary About a Son, and he's been a thoroughly dependable rock writer for more than 20 years now, so he knows what he's doing. And as for Mould, the guy has had one of the weirdest, most interesting life stories of any major rock figure. First, there's Hüsker, the band he led through its tumultuous, historic nine-year run as early hardcore stalwarts. Then there's Sugar, the trio Mould fronted through the early 90s, never making anything like Hüsker's impact but still landing a few ridiculously hooky power-pop jams on alt-rock radio during the height of the grunge era, no mean feat. Mould's also released eight solo albums since 1989, the most recent of which is last year's District Line. But I'm probably most interested in Mould's short run as a writer for motherfucking World Championship Wrestling, right when that company was reaching its squalid, absurd end. Any book that includes anecdotes about both Greg Ginn and Lex Luger is well worth your money. There's the long and ultimately triumphant story of Mould's sexuality. Mould, who is gay, took years to come out of the closet, but now he and Richard Morel run the D.C.-area gay dance night Blowoff. Here's what Mould has to say about the project in a statement from the publishers: "For many years, people have asked if and when I would write my autobiography. I have always looked forward to this point in time, where I could tell my stories, to answer the many questions about the music and the lifestyle, and how they inform the creative process. I have not been alone on this ride: friends and foes, mentors and associates, peers, lovers, all traveling by my side. The ride so far has been incredible, and I hope to do my memory right in documenting the journey."Little, Brown and Company is scheduled to publish Mould's autobiography, which currently has no title, in fall 2010. So now you know what you're getting for Christmas in two years. In related news, Mould announced on his website yesterday that he's got another solo album in the works. Mould produced and mixed the album, which still has no title, and it's due on April 7.
