Photo by Kathryn YuWith the glue still drying on those wacky Skeletal Lamping sticker sets, Of Montreal frontguy Kevin Barnes is already starting to patch together ideas for its successor. Speaking with Rolling Stone's Rock Daily blog, Barnes discussed where he'd like to take the next Of Montreal album. Barnes said, "I kind of want to go in a slightly different direction, experiment, try to look for a new spark, inspiration."But isn't he always doing that?Oh, but then there's this: "What I want to do now is slightly noisier. It's sort of abstract in my mind, but right now what I'll create will be mesmeric and kind of physical music. Try to create music that you have a physical reaction to. Try to touch you on a level that's not strictly intellectual but more physical, and that's not to say you'll dance to it."The music-so-good-you'll-puke gambit apparently sprang from a memorable trip down the streets of London in a taxi. Barnes told Rock Daily, "The cab driver was listening to this music, it was really loud and it was the coolest thing I've ever heard. He didn't speak English so I couldn't talk to him about it, but the music made me feel queasy but in a totally different level."I realize I'm asking the obvious question here, but... you sure that wasn't just the driving itself? While he connects those particular dots, Kevin's got another project to see through: his collaboration with MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden under the Blikk Fang moniker. They apparently have about 20 minutes of music put together from early last year, and are talking to Jon Brion about a possible collaboration. Barnes claims "the stuff we've done so far is sort of a soulful prog. It's probably gonna be a pretty schizophrenic, crazy album." How, uh, unprecedented? There's also an Of Montreal DVD in the works. Barnes told Rock Daily, "We've filmed two shows, a show from L.A. from last year's Hissing Fauna tour and we filmed one a month ago in Atlanta, so we do have plans to release a pretty comprehensive DVD with all the videos and two full live performances and documentary material as well."Soon, though, you can get a glimpse of the real thing, as Of Montreal take to the road for all those dates we mentioned the other day. Well, all but one, anyway; the band's Berlin show on January 20 has been cancelled, so they can jet off to London to share a stage with Franz Ferdinand. Now there's a best-dressed contest waiting to happen.Do note that the band hits "Letterman" December 18, and that collection of Jon Brion remixes is due digitally January 6 and January 27 on CD and LP from Polyvinyl.read more

If you followed of Montreal down their Hissing Fauna/Skeletal Lamping rabbit holes, you’ll be prepared for their Jon Brion-produced soul-and-R&B-influenced (aka Parliament-nodding) 10th album False Priest. We’ve already seen them join forces to cover the Jackson 5. Last night of Montreal and Solange Knowles teamed up again, this time with a bunch of mimes to do False Priests’s “Sex Karma” on Fallon. She appears on the album version, too. She also appears to enjoy the Roots outro music. There’s also ...
