Like many Pitchfork readers-- guessing here-- I'm not too terribly familiar with Maroon 5 catalogue outside of a couple of the big radio hits. What I've heard, anyway, strikes me as being pretty decent as far as these corporate rock bands go, and Adam Levine at least has a voice completely distinct from all the gruff, throaty losers who sprang up in the the wake of the alt-rock 1990s. As reported a couple of months ago, it turns out that someone involved with the band has an ear out for what's going on indie music sphere. A new remix album, Call and Response, has re-workings of Maroon 5 tracks by Of Montreal, Cool Kids, Cut Copy, and Deerhoof, in addition to contributions from more prominent remixes like DJ Premier, Pharrell, and Mark Ronson. The record is out this week, and the whole thing is streaming now over at Maroon 5's MySpace. Two tracks in particular are worth checking out, if only to hear what a couple of artists we've followed closely this year do with the originals. Deerhoof's take on "Goodnight Goodnight" is shockingly conventional, as they essentially just give the original an alternate backing with a bit more space and a slightly jazzy feel. And then Cut Copy take "This Love"-- a pretty good song any way you slice it-- and impart a fizzy and highly appealing dancefloor sheen, extending it to just over seven minutes in the process.Streams:> Maroon 5: Remixes[from Call and Response; out now on A&M]
