Say what you will about Brendan O'Brien, the producer who manned the boards for the overpacked Rising, the slick Devils & Dust, and the unbalanced Magic, but he knows how to juggle the E Street Band members. On this second song from Springsteen's upcoming Working on a Dream, O'Brien seems intent on capturing the momentum of a live performance, and so finds ways to work each player into the texture of the sound while giving each his or her turn in the spotlight-- an impression bolstered by the in-the-studio video. There's no drum solo, but Max Weinberg keeps the song moving at an urgent pace, while Springsteen's vocals sound rough but insistent, as if he's been singing himself raw. "My Lucky Day" doesn't just sound like it was made for an arena; O'Brien creates such a big stage for the band that the song sounds like it was made in an area.Compare that with "The Wrestler", Springsteen's solo contribution to Darren Aronofsky's film of the same name (the song will be available as a bonus track on Working on a Dream). Following a synth and piano intro that suggests "Secret Garden" for the ring, Springsteen settles into a slow, starkly acoustic pace, like Devils & Dust but better. It's obviously covering some of the same territory as his solo material, but he has found a grim humor that mixes well with his imagery: "If you've ever seen a one-legged man, then you've seen me." "The Wrestler" is only modestly cinematic-- a casual embrace rather than a sleeper hold.[from Working on a Dream; due 01/27/09 from Columbia]
