I never thought I'd be writing a headline even close to that, but in less than a year, Fucked Up's gone from the light bulb factory to playing all their indie-rock cards just right. That said, it's hard to get even slightly cynical about this: During the Toronto crew's 12-hour marathon last month, Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig showed he listens to more than Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel in his off time, giving spirited performances of Blitz's "Someone's Gonna Die," also covered by Rancid, and the Descendents' "Parents." Who would've ever thought they'd see skinheads pumping their fists hardcore style to a Koenig vocal turn on a classic UK punk song? (Not me.) The latter was written by the recently deceased Frank Navetta, so this one goes out to him.

Fucked Up released their excellent conceptual LP One Day last year, and they’ve already got the follow-up LP Another Day coming this summer. (Fucked Up side project Jade Hairpins also just announced a new album. Those guys are as productive as ever.) We’ve already posted Another Day lead single “Stimming,”...

Last year, the great Toronto experimental rock ‘n’ roll band Fucked Up released their album One Day. For that one, all the members of Fucked Up had 24 hours to write and record their parts, and the challenge seemed to unlock something in them. Since then, Fucked Up have remained busy, releasing a whole lot of music —...

I don’t know whether the members of Boston’s Burning Lord are actual fucked up people, but they certainly sound like fucked up people. That’s a compliment. Burning Lord make the kind of feral, lo-fi hardcore that can’t really be described as anything other than hardcore. They bring a late-’80s ho...

Fucked Up released their Being Annoying 7″ last year, selling it at their shows but not making it available to stream or buy online. Today, it’s here on the internet for our consumption. Although billed as two tracks, “Being” and “Annoying,” the single really just comprises one song. &a...

Fucked Up have spent two decades reimagining the rock band as a kind of research laboratory. No appreciation of the Toronto collective is complete without a litany of the experiments they’ve undertaken, and I won’t break with tradition here: Fucked Up have been a brawny, elemental hardcore band, as heard on their early 7&...
