After three entirely uncompromising-- yet totally catchy-- lo-fi pop punk platters for Seattle's Sub Pop Records, the Portland pummelers of the Thermals revealed back in July that they might just be looking around for a new label to help with the fourth one.Quite a few imprints came calling, and after much deliberation, the core unit of Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster settled on Olympia, Washington-born, Portland-based Kill Rock Stars. Thermals frontman Hutch Harris says that KRS offered the group "everything [they] wanted" for their new deal. Kill Rock Stars will issue the Thermals' fourth LP, Now We Can See, on April 7, with a leadoff 7" due March 10. We reached out to Harris this week via e-mail just as the ink was drying on their new contract to discuss the deal, the current state of both Now We Can See and the band's lineup, his nearly severed finger (complete with photos!), and nude pix of a pop icon.read more

There are some great things about seeing a band like the Thermals. For one, you know you're gonna see at least twenty of your favorite The Thermals songs in one night. And even at a less-than-sold-out show that was a late-add to a pair of sold-out gigs Friday and Saturday, tired crowd and tired band, there wasn't a moment where Hutch and Kathy w...
When you combine elderly people and indie rock, you get hilarious memes. That's just science. Scrapple.tv's Breakfast At Sulimay's is a Web video series in which three seasoned listeners critique a wide range of recent tracks at a Philadelphia diner. (Photo from last year's Rachael Ray SXSW party by Tyler Grisham)Last month, we reported that TV chef Rachael Ray would throw another food-and-indie rock party at SXSW. At the time, the only bands rumored to be playing were the Airborne Toxic Event and the Hold Steady. Well, it's confirmed: As reported by EW.com and confirmed by Ray's website, ...
As we previously reported, the feisty foodie is returning to Austin this year for her second awkwardly titled (and conceptualized) SXSW showcase: Rose's Mojito and Rachael Ray's Feedback: The B-Side. It takes place 3/21 at Maggie Mae's with the Hold Steady, the New York Dolls (!), Bob Schneider, the Airborne Toxic Event, Ra Ra Riot, Semi Preciou...

Photo by Alicia J. RoseIt's never a bad idea to go see the Thermals. Five years ago, I saw the Portland ragers play a converted auto body shop in Baltimore with the Hold Steady opening, and they wrecked. They're playing slightly larger venues these days, but it's safe to say that they will bring same bouncing-off-walls basement-punk energy and a...
