The Tain EP by the Decemberists has a history that's long and circuitous enough for, well, an 18-minute composition based on an Irish epic myth. Which is exactly what it is. The EP first came out on Spanish label Acuarela in 2004. Kill Rock Stars re-released the disc a year later, just before the baroque-beguiled jangle-poppers made the leap to Capitol. The 18-minute video for The Tain, by filmmaker Andy Smetanka, finally appeared early this year on The Decemberists: A Practical Handbook DVD, which also documented a 2005 concert.Smetanka-- who's based in singing Decemberist Colin Meloy's native Missoula, Mont.-- made The Tain video entirely from "silhouette crepe paper stop motion animation," Meloy told Pitchfork senior news editor Amy Phillips three years ago. It's an impressive feat, and if you like The Tain EP's Chris Walla-produced embrace of metal-esque neoclassical mythos, then you won't be disappointed. The Sword and the Stone-style text helps narrate the storyline now and then, between scenes of creeping snails, battling knights, and sinister skeletons. When the Decemberists (and Shara Worden) played "The Wanting Comes In Waves/Repaid" on Leno, it felt a bit fragmented. There was no such problem last night in Hollywood when the band launched their A Short Fazed Hovel Tour. Over the course of the 2-hour set, they tackled Hazards Of Love in its entirety and performed a slew of other songs from th...
Like they did at The Colbert Report, the Decemberists brought Shara Worden and their mythical prog jam "The Wanting Comes In Waves/Repaid" to Leno last night (Shara plays the "jealous forest queen" obvs). The difference between the two shows being Colbert's featured a somewhat amusing interview with the band while Leno's featured none. (As in no...
When My Morning Jacket released Evil Urges, "Highly Suspicious" immediately stood out from the rest of the track list with its disco falsetto, group chain-gang vocalisms, and, most of all, its peanut butter pudding surprise. It's no surprise (sorry) VHS Or Beta chose the song for their remixing purposes: It was already halfway to being a Nitzer ...

Picking up on the good vibes left by 2006's Guitarmageddon showdown, Stephen invited back Chris Funk along with the rest of the Decemberists for an interview (Colin defends his 19th century fixation) and a performance of "The Wanting Comes in Waves" with Shara Worden last night. Watch at Videogum
As festival-lineup announcement season (yes, it's its own season now) continues, the most entertaining game to play with respect to headliners is "What year is this, 1991?" I thought Lolla had it wrapped with their zeitgeist grabbing spread of Tool, Jane's Addiction, Beastie Boys, and Depeche Mode, and congrats Lolla the award is still yours. Bu...
