Jens Lekman played a few songs ahead of fellow Swede Frida Hyvönen's set Tuesday night at Googie's Lounge in New York, BrooklynVegan reports. As shouldn't be too surprising from a guy who had a roomful of Williamsburgers dancing to Mariah Carey during his CMJ set less than a month ago, one of those songs was a Boyz II Men cover. Lekman does II's emotional, Babyface-penned ballad "Water Runs Dry" totally straight, like the Tough Alliance covering teen-pop duo Lucky Twice's "Lucky" earlier this year; he accompanies himself on piano, and what shortcomings his voice has compared to that of Wanya Morris only enhance the alluring sincerity of the performance. The crowd chuckles-- to these ears smugly-- after Lekman announces the song's provenance, which leads the pop maestro to make a matter-of-fact pronouncement: "It's not a guilty pleasure. Just pleasure." No real argument here. (via BrooklynVegan)MP3:> Jens Lekman: "Water Runs Dry" (live in New York)[original version from II; out now on Motown]
