MGMT's debut album, Oracular Spectacular, has made the Brooklyn band known mostly for bombastic electro-glam, but they slow things down some on "Pieces of What", also from the full-length. In this performance for the Spinner blog's "The Interface" series, MGMT sound less like Muse, Mew, or Queen than Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" with a big Britpop coda (oddly enough, Beach House could probably do a great slowed-down, spaced-out cover of this). For the first part of the song, just bare electric-guitar strums and weeping slide leads accompany a weary, raspy vocal. The "Time to Pretend" video lied to me, they look just like regular guys. Renditions of this and a few other MGMT tunes are posted over at Spinner, who gave their studio a retro makeover just for the occasion.Video:> MGMT: "Pieces of What" (live on "The Interface")[original version from Oracular Spectacular; out now on Columbia]
