Here's your October Surprise, only a week or so late. Somewhere in the vast desert, Los Angeles duo Rainbow Arabia are training for battle on a makeshift assortment of Mideast-minded musical weaponry (some of it no doubt left over from the Soviets). Their war cry, however, is "Let Them Dance", so it's a good thing we won't have President Bush around to keep us safe from them much longer.This single from Rainbow Arabia's Basta EP puts Tiffany Preston's avian yelps-- part M.I.A., part Ponytail's Molly Siegel-- amid post-punk guitar stabs, thickly distorted synth lines, and programmed beats. The video, directed by Jacqueline Castel, could hardly be a more apropos visual accompaniment: Preston and husband/bandmate Danny stand amid the sands, Tiffany barking orders, Danny as stoically still as a Buckingham Palace guard.
