Stephen Malkmus is known for many things, but bringing the funk isn't one of them (maybe Wowee Zowee's "Flux=Rad" or Face the Truth's "Kindling for the Master", OK, but still). Backed by the Jicks last night at the Pageant in St. Louis, Malkmus played James Gang's groove-oriented classic-rock hit, "Funk #49", with like-minded tourmates Blitzen Trapper joining in on stage. It looks like a Real Emotional, Furr-y jam session-- and somewhere, Homer Simpson is nodding yes to every beat. [original version from James Gang Ride Again]

So far the rollout for Stephen Malkmus' upcoming Groove Denied -- the electronic solo album Matador Records originally shelved in favor of last year's wheelhouse indie rocker Sparkle Hard -- has given us some memorable images. The "Viktor Borgia" video had Malkmus dancing alone in a club plus a digital version of himself dance-battling Ariana&am...

Stephen Malkmus isn't the only Pavement alum exploring new sounds on his new record. As heard on last month's "HYP-NO-TIZED," co-founder Scott Kannberg has lately been refining his sound under the name Spiral Stairs.
