Ne-Yo, where are you? Good "Magic" songs by light-voiced pop/r&b crooners have been gathering lately. First, Robin Thicke erased the past-- except for swirling Philadelphia-style orchestration and conga-accented disco beats-- and made your pain disappear on the title track of the singer's latest album. Now Justin Timberlake pulls his falsetto out of the box amid limber, "Sexy Ladies"-esque soul-funk on new track "Magic", apparently produced by Norwegian superduo Stargate (behind deservingly huge hits by Ne-Yo, Beyonce, and Rihanna, among others). His powers aren't necessarily at their height, but they're definitely intact. David Blaine, you is a punk.Online buzz varies as to whether this is a FutureSex / LoveSounds leftover, a leak from Timberlake's upcoming third album, or a demo of a track intended for Rihanna or Britney. The lofty vocal range and lyrics about what your touch does to me, "boy", make the last option a likely one: "Everything ain't what it seems," Timberlake observes. After an opening string flourish, the track is mostly squelchy synths and neatly chopped ooh-oohs atop a simple bass groove, broken up by a lush, harmony-drenched bridge. All in all, it's pretty good party music that I'm sure would also sound nice with the windows down-- closer to the caliber of Timberlake's work on T.I.'s "Dead & Gone" than his collaborations with Madonna and Duran Duran. If I had a magic power, it would be to go back in time to the beginning of this post and somehow work in the phrase Finding Ne-Yo. (via Music Is the Heart of Our Soul)MP3:> Justin Timberlake: "Magic"
