I'm not a close follower of the Deerhunter blog, but the piece Bradford Cox wrote about Stereolab's "Blue Milk" about a year ago has stayed with me, because I felt like he and I hear the same things in that amazing song (he gets a Pitchfork dig in there, too, but whatev). Atlas Sound, Cox's side project, recently spent a few weeks opening for Stereolab on their North American tour; somewhere in there he took the opportunity to remix their single "Neon Beanbag", and 4AD just posted it. It's called the "Southern Baptist Remix", and it starts with a sample of a preacher, but once the tune kicks in the biggest difference is the addition of some bright and shimmery synths that complement the buoyant mood. A neon beanbag reflected in a cracked mirror, maybe.  MP3:> Stereolab: "Neon Beanbag (Atlas Sound Remix)"

Back in 2019, Stereolab returned to the stage for the first time in a decade. Their performance at that year’s Pitchfork Music Festival, although abbreviated by rain, was a total thrill. They kept touring up until the onset of COVID in early 2020, then revved back up for some festival gigs last fall. Today, they’ve announced ...
Jarvis Cocker recorded an entire album of ’60s and ’70s French pop covers — Chansons D’Ennui, credited to the fictional artist Tip-Top — as a companion to Wes Anderson’s new movie The French Dispatch. We’ve already heard its lead single, a cover of Christophe’s &...
Last year, Death Valley Girls, the psychedelic garage rock group from Los Angeles, released Under the Spell Of Joy, an album that veered all over the aesthetic map. That record sounded like what might happen if Stereolab and Thee Headcoatees went on a peyote voyage while listening to obscure ’70s funk together, and it ruled. Today, Dea...
