Summing up Deerhunter's output to date in his review of the fine two-fer Microcastle / Weird Era Cont., Marc Hogan writes, " If Cryptograms brutalized the pop ideal like a guitar-wielding David Lynch, leaving the follow-up Fluorescent Grey EP an exquisite corpse, then Microcastle resurrects it, scar tissue and all. The resulting 2xCD set captures urgent and imaginative songs that reorganize 4AD haze, off-kilter indie pop, crashing garage-punk, forward-leaning krautrock, and hypnotic Kranky ambience into a singular-sounding call-to-arms." In April of this year, Pitchfork.tv spent some time with Deerhunter while they were recording Microcastle at Nicolas Vernhes' Rare Book Room Studio in Brooklyn. For this episode of "In the Studio", we spoke to Vernhes and the band about the creative process and how this album came together, and Part 1 includes footage from the recording of "Agoraphobia", "Calvary Scars", and "Nothing Ever Happened". “I want to be the Patti Smith of now, with something like ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger’ blaring out of kids’ speakers. I fantasize about that, but I’m not going to be that. I’m just not that dangerous,” Bradford Cox told me in an interview for The Big Takeover back in 2008. While it’s defeatist to [...]

There’s something about this time of year that just makes some loud, boozy garage rock sound perfect. I guess other people think that too, considering some of the releases of late. Deerhunter’s wonderfully chaotic new album is out very soon, Thee Oh Sees recently dropped one of their best records yet, and now Adult Swim [...]

Since the release of their triumphant sophomore album, 2007′s Cryptograms, Atlanta’s Deerhunter have produced a pretty vast catalog that’s been both unpredictable and consistently great to an almost shocking degree. Expand the scope of that catalog to include the three LPs from Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox&#...

We’ve heard the title track and seen the eye-popping Fallon performance, and now we get to hear all of Monomania, the fifth album from Atlanta fuzz-rock iconoclasts Deerhunter. The album isn’t set to arrive for another couple of weeks, but now we can stream the entire messy, hooky 43-minute affair below. (via NPR) Monomania i...
