Jonathan Richman, as usual, already said it perfectly 20 years ago: "I've been all around the world, but I love New England best. I may be prejudiced, but it's true, I love new England best." Hailing from Portland, Ore., not Maine, the Decemberists aren't quite as partial. On "Valerie Plame" B-side "O New England", from the band's singles series, Colin Meloy is likely to offend Red Sox Nation sensibilities by bringing up New York or referring to New England as an "empire" (salt in mourning Sox fans' wounds, guys). But the Decemberists aren't like to offend too many eardrums with this gently strolling midtempo guitar-pop tune, which oddly enough recalls Richman devotees the Lucksmiths-- particularly Naturaliste's "Sandringham Line", from its melody and 1960s pop-style backing vocals to its train line motifs and image of a city fading into the distance. Hope the Decemberists remembered to drive past the Stop 'n' Shop with their radio on. (via Stereogum)[from Always the Bridesmaid: A Singles Series, Vol. 1; out now on Capitol/Y.A.B.B. And in a couple of weeks, they're coming back again with a new EP called Traveling On.
Hyperliterate indie-rock veterans the Decemberists put out their synth-heavy new album I'll Be Your Girl earlier this year. And earlier today, they took it to CBS This Morning, performing anthemic early single "Once In My Life" for the show's long-running Saturday Sessions series. Sadly, they didn't bring the really tall guy from the music video...

I don't know if you guys know this about me, but I am tall. As in: Freaky tall, NBA-starting-center tall, regularly-hit-my-head-on-doorways tall. (Here's an article that I wrote about it a few months ago.) This is mostly a good thing. People remember my name, I can see at shows, and I can reach things on…

Every month, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda shares a new Hamilton-inspired song as part of what he calls his Hamildrops. In the recent past, that's included tracks from people like "Weird Al" Yankovic and the Decemberists -- people who, you might not be shocked to learn, might do songs inspired by Broadway musicals. The eternally hard&#...
