A low-key environment suits the psychedelic pop of Department of Eagles new In Ear Park, as we heard in a recent "DUMBO Session" and on Pitchfork.tv's "Don't Look Down". In addition to performances of the latest record's "Phantom Other", "Herring Bone" and "Balmy Night", the Brooklyn duo of Fred Nicolaus and Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen recorded two previously unreleased songs during a live session over at the Daytrotter studio. Nicolaus' "1997" dates back to when he was living in "a yuppie apartment on the Upper East Side that my boss had hooked me up with," so his songs tended to be more quiet; it's a reflective tune marked by dusky melisma and trebly guitar arpeggios. "What Is Your Deal?" is a volatile, Rossen-penned work in progress, perhaps indicating the influence of Grizzly Bear's Radiohead opening slot in its paranoid mantra, "Come on, man, get off it." All of that is true. Also true: With the current expansive fawning over Grizzly Bear it could be easy to temporarily forget about Dan Rossen's Department Of Eagles. It gets more difficult, though, when In Ear Park's title track is soundtracking Soft Bank commercials featuring Brad Pitt and a sensitive sumo wrestler. It gets slightly easier again...

Well, it was actually for Ed Droste's birthday, but he performed it as part of the New Yorker's "Love Is Strange" Speakeasy event this past Valentine's Day at Galapagos in Dumbo. You remember, it was the song we posted when Grizzly Bear/Department Of Eagles wanted to make sure you knew they still loved each other. Droste introduces Rossen's take...
Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon get lonely, so as mentioned, their N.A.S.A. project includes more guests than Disneyland. Last night at MoMA, Dan Rossen and Fred Nicolaus premiered their first video, for In Ear Park's woozy standout "No One Does It Like You." It was a PopRally event, the same performance series that has brought Sigur Rós and comedy short films to the museum in recent months. We sent Natasha Ryan to bring back images, and tapped the internet to bri...
Music videos are at a weird point in their evolution right now. Thanks to the internet, we can watch basically any video ever made whenever we want. But now that MTV has become an entire network devoted to dating shows from third-tier celebrities, those videos never quite reach TV audiences, at least not in the numbers they once did. And so vide...
