This is pretty far-fetched, I know, but imagine right now you're sitting in your chair, just kind of staring off into space. Then Nick Thorburn from Islands walks in from outdoors, a paper airplane is thrown, and suddenly you're staring off into space. You know? That's pretty much the setup for the video to "Creeper", the sleekly catchy standout from the Montreal-based sextet's latest, Arm's Way.For a moment we see Thorburn singing out of a glowing, starfaring globe, but then we're back to the room where his previously zoned-out colleagues are now fighting off a black-covered something or other, accompanied by interlocking guitars and steel drums. "Someone was hiding in the dark room in my home," Thorburn observes, as if narrating the scene. Watery computer-generated figures dance on the kitchen table. A bigger watery computer-generated figure transmogrifies into... uh, some other kind of figure. I hope they're not doing all this just for the pleasure of watching fools like me struggle to describe it. Anyway, trippy sci-fi/horror video, dudes.[from Arm's Way; out now on Anti-]

Ever since Nick Thorburn brought back Islands circa COVID, the band has been mighty prolific. They’ve thus far released two albums this decade, 2021’s Islomania and 2023’s And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs. Now, they’re already back with their third in a three-year span.

Last month, Death Valley Girls, the Los Angeles band who make awesomely psychedelic garage rock, released their album Islands In The Sky. It fucking rules. Today, the band has followed that LP with a new single, and it’s got a bit of a wild backstory.
