There was no horse this time. Nary an orgy or fife-playing satyr. An acoustic in-store may not offer the same baroque pageantry as Friday's set at Roseland, but last night's of Montreal Rough Trade East performance did give attendees a close-up listen to -- wait -- the band's songs. Yes, remove the red body paint and gold short shorts and you not only have a nude Kevin Barnes, you also realize (again) that Skeletal Lamping's songwriting can be just as ambitious as oM's visual cluster-fuck. (Minus the possible cruelty to animals.) Watch the nubile miscreants.

Last week, of Montreal released their 13th album, Aureate Gloom, and we heard the album’s opening track, “Bassem Sabry,” back in 2014. Today, the band release a video for the single, which was directed and produced by Ben Rouse, and features members of the band frolicking in a kind of psychedelic garden. Its absurdi...

It’s easy to take Kevin Barnes for granted. Over thirteen full-lengths and just about as many changes in style, of Montreal have refused to sit still for almost two decades. Everyone has their favorite oM era — mine’s Satanic Panic through Skeletal Lamping — but, above all, the band has always possessed a ...

Less than a year after releasing Lousy With Sylvianbriar, Athens glam crew of Montreal return in a couple of months with the new LP Aureate Gloom. According to frontman Kevin Barnes, the album is both inspired by the “mid to late ’70s music scene in New York” and by his own recent divorce. The band [...]
