Hip-hop's sleeper romance with eminently deserving London boundary-smasher M.I.A. is a fun thing to behold. The love affair probably peaked, profile-wise anyway, with Kanye West's lackluster appropriation of Kala's Clash-sampling "Paper Planes" for T.I.'s "Swagger Like Us", with such famous swaggerers as Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. But this has been a story since long before the first joints were passed in anticipation of Pineapple Express; Bun B and Rich Boy sounded terrific on a "Paper Planes" remix last year, and other rapper-guesting M.I.A. remixes have kept trickling out ever since. Here, Hova and Wale each hop on separate remixes of another Kala killer, "Boyz". Jay picks up on the track's revolutionary imagery, relating it back to the hood and the American Dream, in a pretty strong verse. Barack Obama also gets a nod (he's sooo hot right now). Washington, D.C.'s own Wale starts on a familiar theme-- he's the real deal, other rappers are fake-- then eventually he, too, gets to Obama and Condoleezza Rice (WTF happened to her, anyway? Does she still work here?). Wale's likable enough to sell his ideas to this undecided voter, although for future playlists I'll probably turn to Jay's version first. Here's hoping before long we'll get to hear ?uestlove repeat the "how many, how many"-like vocal noises in a "Boyz" live performance. (via Discobelle)MP3s:> M.I.A. [ft. M.I.A.’s not afraid to purchase URLs or to continue releasing new material in the face of ill-founded backlash. Here’s another weirdo gem ostensibly called “Bedroom To The Hallway To The Road To The World,” a title that comes off like amped Beckett stage directions. The backdrop is skeletal, bass-y with al...
Nearly every blog comment or review said 19-year-old Rye Rye stole the show at HARD NYC back in July. It was a welcome return after Rye Rye was quiet for a bit, and her in-the-works debut album, Go! Pop! Bang! was delayed (for good reason — she had a baby girl in late 2009). So [...]
Last week another collaboration (“S.U.S. (Save Ur Soul)” is another) from Blaqstarr and M.I.A. hit the web. And it looks like M.I.A. bought another single serving URL to host the track herself. My cohorts and much of the world may disagree, but I think ///Y/’s a good record. It opens with “The Message,” here recast as “FACEBOOKGOOGLEMYSPACEYOUTUBE,” in case you had trouble getting that message. The clip’s aesthetic follows the digital explosions of “Story To Be Told&...
Diplo tweeted a link to this “lost” M.I.A. song, presumably from the ///Y/ sessions. As you can tell, it’s a demo, without much more than M.I.A.’s processed vocals, a beat, and a grinding synth, but Diplo also said he may leak the full version soon. Listen:MIA and Diplo – “4THEPEOPLEON...
