Hip-hop's sleeper romance with eminently deserving London boundary-smasher M.I.A. is a fun thing to behold. The love affair probably peaked, profile-wise anyway, with Kanye West's lackluster appropriation of Kala's Clash-sampling "Paper Planes" for T.I.'s "Swagger Like Us", with such famous swaggerers as Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. But this has been a story since long before the first joints were passed in anticipation of Pineapple Express; Bun B and Rich Boy sounded terrific on a "Paper Planes" remix last year, and other rapper-guesting M.I.A. remixes have kept trickling out ever since. Here, Hova and Wale each hop on separate remixes of another Kala killer, "Boyz". Jay picks up on the track's revolutionary imagery, relating it back to the hood and the American Dream, in a pretty strong verse. Barack Obama also gets a nod (he's sooo hot right now). Washington, D.C.'s own Wale starts on a familiar theme-- he's the real deal, other rappers are fake-- then eventually he, too, gets to Obama and Condoleezza Rice (WTF happened to her, anyway? Does she still work here?). Wale's likable enough to sell his ideas to this undecided voter, although for future playlists I'll probably turn to Jay's version first. Here's hoping before long we'll get to hear ?uestlove repeat the "how many, how many"-like vocal noises in a "Boyz" live performance. (via Discobelle)MP3s:> M.I.A. [ft. Yesterday Diplo stopped dissing M.I.A. for a second to diss Washed Out’s Within And Without. As he punned via Twitter: “Washed out need to put some starch in the wash cause this Álbum sounds kinda limp.” Ditto this: When someone called Diplo a “douche bag” for the tweet he replied “d b...

“Zig Zag” was supposed to appear on underrated / / / Y / , but instead of including it in Vicki Leekx with those other album castoff, M.I.A. saved it for a standalone leak. The sing-song finds her playfully echoing New Kids On The Block’s “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)” and [...]
Reuters - After garnering notoriety through production work for M.I.A., Baltimore DJ, producer and hip-hop artist Blaqstarr will be branching out on his own this week, for the first time since 2008.
M.I.A.’s ///Y/ is a good album. I disagreed with the reception it received, and was tired of reading the same tired complaints reworded slightly in reviews and comments, so I scribbled 8 Reasons Why ///Y/ Is Better Than You Remember. It’s understood people have different tastes, that reviews are just opinions, but blind conse...

The Specials, who recently reunited, backed up M.I.A. on “It Takes A Muscle.” It’s one of the more melodic tracks on ///Y/ and was produced by Diplo. M.I.A.’s reggae-flavored version of the Spectral Display track works for the Specials — though, as Diplo often points out, singing doesn’...
