Many of us are in the mood for West Coast music this week. Well, here’s some West Coast music. Rapper Jay Worthy is Canadian-born, and he’s actually Grimes’ stepbrother, which will never stop being weird. But Worthy has been building a rep in the West Coast underground, and the rap underground in general, for many years. Last year, he released the Roc Marciano-produced LP Nothing Bigger Than The Program. Earlier this week, he was one of many West Coast rappers to take the stage at Kendrick Lamar’s Pop Out concert. Now, he’s made a whole album with DāM-FunK.

The great Compton rapper/producer DJ Quik, still making great music after a couple of decades in the game, has a new album called The Midnight Life coming out next month, and I cannot wait. First single “That Getter” was an absolute slapper, and now he’s followed it up with a slick, squeaky ’80s-funk pasti...

The great L.A. rapper and producer DJ Quik released Quik Is The Name, his classic debut album, 23 years ago, and he remains absolutely vital today. I can’t think of a single other person in rap who’s been as good as Quik for anywhere near as long, and he’s still wrecking shit. Quik’s got a [...]

Hip-hop wasn’t exactly bereft of do-it-all visionary control freaks before Kanye West showed up — just ask Chuck D, the RZA, or DJ Quik — but nobody took the auteur approach to Yeezy’s extremes. Of all the ways Mr. West has contributed to rap’s evolution over the past decade, to me the most excit...

Three years ago, the permanently underrated West Coast rap veterans DJ Quik and Kurupt joined forces for BlaQKout, a deeply weird and personal rap album that finally won both of them some of the critical acclaim they’d long deserved. And now they’ve got another track together: A dark and fearsome piece of heaviness called &am...
