I don’t know whether the members of Boston’s Burning Lord are actual fucked up people, but they certainly sound like fucked up people. That’s a compliment. Burning Lord make the kind of feral, lo-fi hardcore that can’t really be described as anything other than hardcore. They bring a late-’80s hooligan intensity that draws on both punk and metal without ever crossing the line into either genre, and their murky crunch feels less like a genre exercise and more like a way to let the universe know that you absolutely hate it. They’re awesome, and their debut album has arrived.

This past weekend, at the Boston Calling festival, the Decemberists played their first show in nearly three years (not counting that Parks & Rec performance). The Boston Calling Festival started last year, and this year’s edition, which comes to the city next month, boasts one of the most vanilla festival lineups we’re likely to see this year (which is some kind of achievement). But the festival is apparently successful enough that its organizers have added a second weekend later i...
Back in 2013, the Boston hardcore/metal legends Converge earned an Album Of The Week for their furious All We Love We Leave Behind. And though it’s not exactly common practice to drop a video a year and a half after the album comes out, Converge operate on their own timetable, and they’ve just shared an [...]

This summer’s Boston Calling festival appears to be one of the few big multi-day shows that OutKast won’t be headlining this year. Instead, Jack Johnson tops a bill that otherwise skews orthodox-indie. The festival, which had its inaugural edition last year, comes to City Hall Plaza 5/23-25, and the bill includes Death Cab Fo...
