Liars, which has functioned as the solo project of longtime vocalist Angus Andrew for about half a decade now, haven’t released an album since 2018’s Titles With The Word Fountain. Andrew has popped up intermittently since then, remixing P.E. in pre-pandemic times and duetting with Jamie Stewart on the recent Xiu Xiu album. Now it seems he’s ready to unleash another Liars album on the world.

Annie Clark doesn’t mention the album they tackled, but the St. Vincent mastermind did Tweet that she teamed up with Tropicalia stalwarts Os Mutantes and Liars for one of Beck’s Record Club collaborations and that it’ll be online “soonish” and was “serious fun.” (Guess: First ...

A couple days ago we heard Devendra Banhart inhabit Liars’ excellent “The Overachievers,” reversing the frequency of the opposites attract/urban cynic vs. L.A. hippie love song for the deluxe edition of Sisterworld’s Reinterpretations disc. Various able-minded individuals also helped build the “reinterpr...

One of my favorite Sisterworld songs is the sweetly sarcastic urban cynic vs. L.A. hippie love song “The Overachievers.” What better way to invert the frequency (and bio-cars, woodsy walks, etc.) than to have longtime Hairy Faerie Devendra Banhart offer a mellowed-out, dew-dripped campfire version? There's a certain paranoia lurking beneath the laconic vocalisms Angus layers at the outset of "Scissor," the opening track to Liars typically excellent new LP Sisterworld. Andrew uses that storyteller's pace and injection of unease to foreshadow then launch into a claustrophobic freakout. Reset. And repeat. It's a push-pull of dramatic tension ...
