Back in 2017, shortly after Tom Petty died, Spoon’s Britt Daniel was one of 74 artists who told us about their favorite Petty songs. Daniel picked Petty’s Full Moon Fever classic “A Face In The Crowd.” Here’s what he had to say about it:Divine Fits played “You Got Lucky” at just about every gig we had. What an insane single. It’s got an intense lyric and the most powerful, creepy guitar riff and somehow Dan was able to tap into that attitude every time. It was the greatest feeling in the world to be in a band that could play that song and pull it off. But since yesterday the song I keep playing is “A Face In The Crowd,” a ballad that came out as I was graduating high school and leaving my hometown and most of the people I knew forever. I relive that moment in the song. The minor chords, the vocal, the melody — all haunting and timeless.Back in October, on the day that Petty would’ve turned 70, Spoon took part in Petty’s virtual birthday bash. On that show, the band covered “A Face In The Crowd,” as well as Petty’s 1976 hit “Breakdown.” Those covers hadn’t been archived or on demand, but today, Spoon have released those two covers.

It was way back in June that Spoon released Got Nuffin, a brief collection that gave us our first taste of Transference via the dusky, percussive rocker that gave the EP its name. A couple of weeks later we heard a live take of "Is Love Forever?. At the time we said it sounded like more chaotic, dubbed-out early Joe Jackson. A couple of weeks af...
For those heading uptown Friday night to NYC's American Museum Of Natural History Friday, site of the FADER-presented Animal Collective DJ set/One Step Beyond party, the onstage visual was 33% true to Animal Collective onstage visuals of the past year -- Geologist crouched over a table of equipment, less one Noah Lennox and one Avey Tare. It was...

After this morning, we were an album cover closer to Spoon's Transference in all its anticipated glory. In posting it Brandon likened collecting the various promo bits to piecing together a puzzle, so it's somewhat fitting the album's first single has a title promising a riddle. We first heard this one after last year's festivals where folks wer...

We've talked a bit about Spoon's anticipated seventh album Transference, the band's followup to 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga: You've seen the 11-song tracklist, heard some of its sounds via earlier live and later studio takes, and may have watched a teaser. Puzzles have multiple pieces... This morning we're officially giving you (and everyone else) the...
