Back in 2017, shortly after Tom Petty died, Spoon’s Britt Daniel was one of 74 artists who told us about their favorite Petty songs. Daniel picked Petty’s Full Moon Fever classic “A Face In The Crowd.” Here’s what he had to say about it:Divine Fits played “You Got Lucky” at just about every gig we had. What an insane single. It’s got an intense lyric and the most powerful, creepy guitar riff and somehow Dan was able to tap into that attitude every time. It was the greatest feeling in the world to be in a band that could play that song and pull it off. But since yesterday the song I keep playing is “A Face In The Crowd,” a ballad that came out as I was graduating high school and leaving my hometown and most of the people I knew forever. I relive that moment in the song. The minor chords, the vocal, the melody — all haunting and timeless.Back in October, on the day that Petty would’ve turned 70, Spoon took part in Petty’s virtual birthday bash. On that show, the band covered “A Face In The Crowd,” as well as Petty’s 1976 hit “Breakdown.” Those covers hadn’t been archived or on demand, but today, Spoon have released those two covers.

It has to be an intimidating thing to remix Spoon. You have to know, somewhere deep within yourself, that there’s no way you’re going to improve on the original; an interesting take is the best you can hope for. So credit San Francisco ambient post-rock type Tycho with having the gall to take on “Inside [...]
Spoon made one of the best albums of the year with They Want My Soul and, being the workhorses that they are, the band isn’t slowing down. They shot an episode of Austin City Limits recently, and it’ll be the band’s fourth appearance on the show that’s based out of their hometown. The full episode [...]
Spoon played The Daily Show in their hometown last night — the late-night program has relocated to Austin, Texas this week for South By South Mess, a special segment that they did in the run-up to this year’s midterm elections. The did three They Want My Soul songs: “Inside Out” on the show itself and [...]

Spoon songs tend to be impeccably recorded, with lots of empty space, so you’d think they’d be irresistible for remixers. But we haven’t encountered too many Spoon remixes, especially official Spoon remixes, over the years, perhaps because the producers of the world have realized that they can’t improve on...
Last night, an all-star cast of artists piled into L.A.’s Fonda Theatre to pay tribute to the late Beatle George Harrison. The event, George Fest, was a benefit for the musicians’ charity Sweet Relief, and it featured (deep breath) Brian Wilson, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Norah Jones, Spoon’s Britt Dan...
